THE CITY OF APOPKA VOTES TO END ITS INTERSECTION CAMERA PROGRAM (TRAFFIC LIGHTS)

On Wednesday night, a vote was approved to terminate the city’s contract with the company American Traffic Solutions Inc. on January 1, 2019.

Apopka’s 17 red light cameras were installed nearly 12 years ago, generating millions of dollars in revenue. Mayor Bryan Nelson expressed concern that the city’s red light cameras keep drivers away from the area.

A representative from American Traffic Solutions Inc. said that the cameras should remain connected as they provide valuable resources for the police to review, adding that the video has been used as evidence in various fatal accidents. The measure will be effective on January 1, 2019.
